Painting Calipers

Recommended Posts

Anyone subjected their brakes to this? I'm thinking about painting Clubby's to make him stand out a bit and I have a garage to store it in overnight jacked up. I faintly remember someone having done theirs..

I painted mine last spring. I used G2 Caliper Paint. It's a kit that comes with everything you need. Mach V sells it for around $40. However, I ordered it directly from G2 because they offer custom colors. It's about $100 for the custom color kit. Here's a link to their site: http://www.g2usa.com/

It was pretty easy to do. You just need to make sure you get the brakes really, really clean. You may want to buy additional brake cleaner.

I don't think plasti-dip would be a good idea for painting brakes.

Ah I thought it was you! Good to know. I think I'll go with G2 as well. I'm torn about colors though, I'm down to either yellow, red, or orange. Don't want to do blue as it may clash..

$100 is steep, especially with the tint job happening the same weekend  Plus, I think I might go for something that pops. I like the bright green against the LzB, which is why yellow came to mind. Orange would be UVa colors...gahh decisions!

Painting calipers is a nice touch, especially if the existing calipers are unpainted. I was very happy to get my rear calipers on my original brakes painted red to match my front (1st Gen JCW) calipers. Of course, now that I've upgraded to the R56 JCW BBK, the new rears came pre-painted.

As for using plasti-dip to do it, I strongly urge caution on that. As far as I'm aware, it's not designed to be used on a high-heat application like brake calipers or engines. It could turn into a huge sticky mess, and potentially be a safety hazard such as dripping onto the rotors or who knows, even catching fire!

In any case - be careful and do your research. The brakes are perhaps the most important safety feature on the entire car. It's something you don't want to screw up.

I've painted them on my first car and learned from my mistakes. I didn't prep well and after a few months the paint started to chip. If I decide to paint Gremlins' brakes, I know what to do now.

Hah. I always wondered why you picked orange, every time I see it I see UVa colors

I may actually go orange. It would be a nice clash to the blue and something different. Though, it might look dorky with the UVa plates I'm considering. Picking colors = me :stupid:

I now envy the townies. I miss Cville so much, I'd love to move back there one day. Or farther south. Anywhere but DC/traffic

Yellow would be your best choice if you want to keep the colors right. Yellow is complimentary to Blue on the color wheel.

Actually, orange is the complimentary color to blue and yellow is a secondary complimentary color (one over). Orange is opposite blue, yellow opposite purple and red opposite green

But Yellow would look nice too

Dangit, really? All I remember is being able to get a 1-bdrm for $900 on the downtown mall. $900 gets you a room in a 4-bdrm group/clown house in Arlington.

And yeah, I could see Cville being stuck up. I just liked living in the mountains with a big city feel. DC is too expensive for me to imagine staying here, once my parents leave I don't have a whole lot left here (besides the MINI club, obviously!)
