Welcome to the new members! If you don't want to wait until November for another roadworthy event, take a look at the Calendar! We are meeting up for a run out to Luray Caverns on October 9th. I even set it up to start a little later in the morning so sleepy heads like Ali can sleep in and still make it on time!

Carl, Great tips, thanks for jumping in! And don't forget sunscreen! If you don't plan on staying to watch the afternoon event, there's no need to bring a chair since you'll either be driving or working the course as Carl mentioned. I'll be glad to do a course walk through with anyone who would like to go through it. If you are lucky, you'll work the course first and then drive in the second heat of the morning round. That way, you get to see where other drivers have troubles and there's also a hint of rubber on the pavement if you find yourself adrift in a sea of orange cones. A couple of tips that you'll hear again "In a spin, two feet in". Although it's highly unlikely, if you spin out, one foot on the clutch, one foot on the brake (okay, one on the brake for the autos) and depress them. You'll stop pretty quick. The other is "when in doubt, two feet out", get off of the gas and brakes, let the car decelerate and figure out where you are so you can get back on the course. I would encourage everyone that hasn't done autocross before to ask for a navigator/instructor for at least your first run - this is a beginner friendly activity. I'm really, really looking forward to watching everyone on Saturday, this is gonna be sooooo much fun!

I should add a couple of tidbits that will make the day more fun for you. Empty anything you don't need for the day from your car and leave it at home. You can unload it after the event but why go to all of that trouble? Check your oil. If you don't know how, buy a quart of oil and bring it to the event and ask me to show you how. Be prepared to air your tires down for better traction. I'll bring my pressure gauge and a portable compressor. There's a filling station within a mile of the stadium so you can use that as well. I will have my GoPro and anyone is welcome to use it if they wish. If you have cars between you, it can even make runs in multiple cars in the same heat. If you think you are interested but have any concerns, please PM or email me (or ask while at the Annual club meeting later today). I autocrossed most of last summer and survived the autocross school. There will be instructor/experienced drivers that you can either ride with (in their car) or have in your car.

Ali - you'll probably want to put the numbers on the body of the car. You are going to want to have your windows down or you are going to get really, really hot in the car (you don't have your AC on while doing autocross... Unlike the rest of us, you don't have much window space on the side. I'm going to be there with Lona in a supporting role for this event and yes, there will be cameras and photo's involved. There seems to be a pretty low turnout for this event overall which makes it a great opportunity for folks who have never tried autocross to get out and give it a whirl so if you've been thinking about it, head on out there for it!

It's kinda sad, this will almost certainly be Archi's last DCMM event.
-
I want to take pictures when you do it! Maybe put the GoPro on the back of the car too!
-
Actually Haemish, if we consider quantity, you are now the leader of "Team Seafoam". I was thinking about your Seafoam experience last weekend and with the amount of smoke that you made, you might consider another treatment sooner to see if you can get a little more carbon out.
-
Lona and I tagged a "Justa" at REI yesterday. It was another one of those blue colors, not even sure which. It'll be interesting to leave the Blue MINI group and join the Midnight Black Owners!
-
I was just sitting here, giggling like a little girl to myself trying to figure out how I was going to explain that. Mail slot is pretty much perfect!
-
Hey everyone, Lona is signed up! She's taking her car. It sure would be cool to have more of our women owners/drivers out there for this!

Hey everyone, I need to see if there's anyone here in DCMM Land that can help me out. I don't know how, I don't know when, I don't know why but, I've managed to lose my OEM hood scoop. I put it on last week and today, it's gone. I'm sure nobody stole it or anything but I can assure you, I didn't see if flash in front of my face as it blew off somewhere on the beltway. I need to see if anyone has either a black or Laser Blue hood scoop. If it's OEM, I'll work on replacing it but I'm afraid that I'm going to get backed into a corner with the new car coming in a little over a week and I don't want to try to trade the car in without a scoop... Anyone out there have a scoop in the closet that I can make a deal with you on? I'll even go one farther if you are on the fence. I've got an M7 Ram 2 scoop that's painted in a matte black that you can either borrow or trade. Yep, I need a scoop that bad! Thanks, Craig

That's the 2011 registration. The 2012 registration will open after the new year. I'll try to be one of the first few to register again this year!

I know that not everyone agrees with me on this aspect of seafoam treatments but as you mentioned, I actually plan my seafoam treatments to coincide with oil changes. I don't like the idea of putting solvents into the engine where they are bound to mix with the oil and then leaving the oil contaminated. As far as a new car? The newest MINI can start having carbon build up within it's first year. I think a lot of Quitta's problems with the Blur can be attributed to the carbon build up and MINI USA's refusal to admit that there is an issue. I don't think it would be a bad idea to establish a routine of doing a seafoam treatment with every oil change. By the way, I don't follow the dealer's recommended oil change interval. I do one change between the dealer's changes so I end up doing changes at about 5,000 miles or so. More often if there's been more hard driving.

I think everyone was smiling much more after the Seafoam party and then when we made the stop at Tropical smoothie afterward, there was improvement EVERYWHERE!
-
Haemish - if you can't get any before the M&G on Saturday, text me or something and I'll bring you a can. It's the least I can do for all of your answers about tires and for giving you a hard time lately.

Okay everyone, after much debate, more than just a couple trips to check the route and then a little procrastinating on my part, I've settled on a date.

What: A great run out to Luray Caverns

When: October 9th, 2011 10:00 a.m.

Where: 15201 Washington Avenue, Haymarket VA 20169 (behind the sheetz, in the Bloom Parking lot)

Who: Really? Everyone!

Lona and I went out and did the last route check two weeks ago and the route really was awesome with lots of new pavement, awesome twisties and great scenery. By this time in October, the trees will just be starting to hit their fall colors so we could have some even prettier foliage.

This run will be different than past DCMM events as this is going to be a "Destination" event - it's a one-way trip. Once we arrive at the parking lot for Luray Caverns, we'll have route sheets that you can use to visit a covered bridge, an English pub, a neat little local diner or you can visit the caverns or the maze. There's also a neat automotive museum on the property.

Ryan - I don't know that seafoam would be as effective as the media blasting treatment but it's attacking the same problem and the seafoam will help with some of it. I know there are a few folks who have pulled their own intake manifold off and done their own version of the media blast. They used seafoam and a stiff nylon brush to remove the carbon deposits.

During the mayhem of getting home D.C. today, I saw a classic under a car cover on Glebe Road (north side of Glebe, between Hwy 1 and I-395). Has anyone see that classic out from under the car cover?

Love that fisheye!

Catalina, running it through the gas doesn't get it to the places that it needs to be. Because ours are direct injection engines, the fuel air mixture doesn't flow through the intake tract, only air. The carbon build up that you are trying to get to with the seafoam is typically on the back of the valves. By running the seafoam into the suction side of the PCV valve, you get it flowing through the intake and over the back of the valves. Running it through the gas tank does clean up the injectors, the combustion chamber and the tops of the pistons though. I typically run a 1/2 can through the PCV valve while idling, turn it off and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. Then, start it up, let the idle smooth out and then take it for a drive. If there's no smoke, it's not a bad sign but don't forget that you were a little low on oil so that could have caused you to have less build up. If you are running good quality gas with a good detergent in it then you are getting the injectors and the combustion chamber cleaned all of the time. I know Ali swears that she gets some performance benefit from running the seafoam through the tank but I've run it through the tank and haven't noticed any difference. It varies between cars I guess.

:congrats: See, I'm not always an A-Hole! And I do like the way you paraphrased my words there.
