wahoo_shoe Posted July 15, 2011 Report Posted July 15, 2011 Anyone ever self-installed new mirror covers? I had some influence on my initial purchase and was convinced not to buy the checkered side view mirror caps and now I want to blow some extra cash on them Don't want to spend $200 for the dealer to install them. I'll go check out NAM for advice too.. 2011 Clubman S - LzB/Black "Clubby" Go Wahoos! Saving Second Base, One Mile at a Time! (Round #3, May 2014) http://info.avonfoundation.org/goto/MShoe
IndiCooper Posted July 16, 2011 Report Posted July 16, 2011 Ya its super easy! There's steps on NAM on how to do it, when you undo the clips they're gonna make a breaking noise but dont worry its suppose to do that.
TATTRAT Posted July 16, 2011 Report Posted July 16, 2011 Holy Crap, I can't believe the dealer is gonna charge $200 for a 15 min job, good lawd. As mentioned, super easy to do, and you seem to be on the right path already(as for NAM). It is just a matter of popping a few clips, nothing crazy. http://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/how-to/183308-interior-exterior-mirror-cap-removal-replacement-r55-r56.html flickr
carman63 Posted July 16, 2011 Report Posted July 16, 2011 If you're at the meet & greet today, look me up. I'll be there a bit late. I have a tool that makes it a snap - literally
wahoo_shoe Posted July 17, 2011 Author Report Posted July 17, 2011 Slept too late to make it to Sterling...verryy long week at work Looked on NAM, looks super easy since I have a Gen2. Now I just need to find some.. Sterling has them for $97, outmotoring.com for $94, Morristown (through motoringfile.com) has em for $87. I get coupons every once in awhile for Sterling and would love to further support them, so hopefully I can dig up one or another one comes soon. Reeeaallllyyy want to get them on soon Massive hours worked recently has led to a bit extra cash in the pocket, and I'm blowing it all on Clubby :top: 2011 Clubman S - LzB/Black "Clubby" Go Wahoos! cmcveay Posted July 17, 2011 Report Posted July 17, 2011 When you do it, just make sure to follow one of the early steps very closely. Put a towel or something on the ground, under the mirror. The first time I popped the mirror cap off, it jumped right off and would have gotten damaged if not for the towel. Otherwise, it's a 15 minute job (if you stop to read the directions twice, mop the sweat from your brow and have a drink of water between each side). 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon "Homer" 2012 MB/CR JCW R55 "Merlin" Sold 2009 LB/LB R56 "Archie" Sold
maacodale Posted July 17, 2011 Report Posted July 17, 2011 If you've got a Northern Tool or Harbor Freight up there, they have a set of smallish plastic pry bars that work great for this and they're less than 10 bucks if I remember right.
carman63 Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 I have these scraper-like tools. Basically, a pot scraper that you can buy at most chef stores, but smaller and cheaper. Work one of those around the edge of where the mirror cap meets the black plastic housing. The mirror caps will pop off in your hands. Takes about 15-20 seconds per side EDIT: I have these, the Lil Chizler http://www.lilchizler.com/
wahoo_shoe Posted July 22, 2011 Author Report Posted July 22, 2011 Talked to my MA and MINI of Sterling gave me 15% each Picked them up last night, will put them on this afternoon if this heat decreases without the sun going totally down, or tomorrow 2011 Clubman S - LzB/Black "Clubby" Go Wahoos! MiniMe Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 yeah, Ive seen it done, totally dooable for the self install
wahoo_shoe Posted March 1, 2012 Author Report Posted March 1, 2012 Completed the job back over the summer. I ended up using a silicon spatula to help pry them off. One fell on the ground wasn't a big deal as it was the old black ones and frankly, they get chewed up by rocks anyways. Been loving them since. Might throw on a checkered roof cover or checkered stripes somewhere down the line :top: 2011 Clubman S - LzB/Black "Clubby" Go Wahoos! Saving Second Base, One Mile at a Time!
