  1. That's early!

    Yup, yup.

I like to get down there early enough to take a nap, refuel (eat) and then some Dragon dry runs before dinner. If I could get out of work on time (not gonna happen) it'd be more like a 12M - 2AM escape.

  2. Seen this past Sunday in the Potomac Yards parking lot. I was coming up from Old Town and hitting Starbucks on my way into DC to watch the playoff games. I parked for a few minutes to say "hi", but I couldn't wait for long. Maybe next time.

  3. Hi, just moved here to work at FDA campus on New Hampshire ave. I own a 2009 clubman s with about 126000 mi. Has a coolant leak. What I've read is it is common for thermostat and housing to go. Any recommendations on a goog local mechanic. I can't afford dealer prices. And how much will this repair cost? Thanks

I'm down the road from you near the SS Metro. I know of nothing in the White Oak area and the shops I am familiar with were for my former and older cars (Subie, Acura, Mistubishi), I don't know how well they would do with a MINI.

That said, the only place in MD that I know knows a MINI is Scandinavian, but they aren't near you. I've a few people with older MINIs in my neighborhood (*not* MINI enthusiasts). I'll try to ring their doorbells and find out who they use and get back to you. However, they may use the same local shops I referenced above, one in SS and the other next door in Takoma Park.

  4. I have not had any issues with Safelite in the past with 3 windows replaced on 2 of our other cars over the past ~10 years... BUT... after reading the thread here and North American Motoring I decided to double down (really, double the price).

I don't doubt that Tigger's glass is fine. I just hate, truly HATE having to get something done over when it should have been done correctly the first time. I called the AAA (Rockville) and Safelite (Bethesda) locations where I would be having the work done and they both hesitated when I said it is a MINI. After talking with them I didn't get a feeling of confidence. There are enough stories out there about them using too much adhesive and the A pillar covers popping off on the highway after a windshield replacement.

I spoke with Kristen, my great MoCo service advisor, and she has a spot for Ernie first thing in the morning. With a loaner... oh no... not a loaner again. :frown:

So, GEICO will cover about 1/2 of the cost but I will know that a MINI person worked on Ernie and if they need any other parts that they are right there.

Does this mean that I am following Mr. OEM's advice... hmmm.

Curious. What did MOCO quote you? And you said Geico is covering part of it? I guess we have different policies as they told me they would only cover a windshield replacement up to a specific price, but as that price was within my deductible I was free to use anybody I wanted as it would all be out of pocket.

I ended up using AAA. No leaks that I'm aware of, but the windshield was as pitted after a couple of months as it was after a couple of years. The glass doesn't seem to be very durable.

  5. tag said "suvbait" i let you out at montgomery mall. i was in the red and black Cooper

I came across MD tag SUVBAIT on Friday afternoon. Going around the inner loop from Silver Spring and up 95N. I flashed, I honked, I pulled up up the drivers side and waved. No response. So I got back on the pedal and left him behind.

  6. I'm pretty sure this is the maintenance warranty, not the powertrain. The clutch is considered a consumable, so I believe it is highly unlikely that a extended warranty would cover it. I do know that it's covered under my extended maintenance, though.

Per Rockwell: The clutch is covered by the extended maintenance plan (which I already have).

Still need/want PMOA quote for comparison as I shop.

  7. The factory warranty covers the clutch. They replaced one is Merlin at about 20k.

Thanks. That's what I thought I'd heard (just couldn't recall from where). Also from what I remember the main cost of any clutch work in the MINI comes from the labor as the entire front end has to come off. A one-time clutch replacement at the dealership was enough to cover the cost of the extended warranty (again, from my foggy memory).

The AAA guy was trying to tell me how I didn't need the clutch option as the only way I was going to need a new clutch under 100K miles was if I didn't know how to drive one. I had to explain to him that warranty coverage isn't for covering what should happen, it's for covering what shouldn't.

  8. Hey! Yes that was me!

You discovered my morning breakfast spot (Panera), though I was running a bit late today. I usually sit next to the front window.

Feel free to come and drink coffee with me!

Every once in a while I will see another CR S Roadster parked in this same lot in front of Staples. I've tagged it before but I don't think the owner wants to come out and play. We must be persistent!

    …Mike

I was there about 9:15-ish, I had a 9:30A appointment with the TSA Precheck office. I did a quickie lap to attract (your) attention, but I was in a Countryman loaner from PMOA so you might not have given me much attention even if you did see me.

  9. I was at the Alexandria Commons shopping center on Duke street this morning and saw this beautiful MINI parked in front of the Staples in a spot far, far away from everybody else. Looks familiar :-))

Unfortunately when I'd completed my business the MINI was gone.

  10. I picked up a Rite Light Wireless LED Puck Light at WalMart. Drilled a hole in the dummy plug that goes in the accessory outlet and mounted the backing plate to the dummy plug. $7 for the light and 10 minute job. Runs on 3 AAA batteries so no wiring, and the light tilts. Works like a champ for me.

Cool. Different logistics in the rear of my Clubbie (which I can't show you a pic of as she's at PMOA for the entire holiday weekend and I'm driving loaner Stormtrooper Countryman)

Where you've drilled your hole is the exact location of the power port in my boot (yep, Clubbies have a 2nd one back there). I've been trying to figure out how to duplicate the existing lighting that is on one side in the boot to the other. I know the trick for installing the 2nd reverse light is getting an OEM UK one, but I haven't investigated very far in doing the same with the boot light.
