  1. RSVP opening today?
Yep - RSVPs are OPEN!

Susan and I did the practice run yesterday, and it was a beautiful day for it. The roads are mostly in great shape - there's even new paving on most of Snickersville Turnpike, which makes for a very smooth ride. There are a few other roads on the route where the road isn't in top shape, but no gravel roads.

Attached below is a copy of the April lunch menu at Griffin Tavern, our lunch stop. I highly recommend the Shepherd's Pie - absolutely delicious! :eating:

Looking forward to seeing a bunch of you at the event in less than 2 weeks! :motor:

  2. Sounds like a good plan :top: I can meet most evenings or weekends anywhere around Chantilly, Fairfax or Sterling area. If you are going to Ted's next week I could possible meet where you all park.
I am hoping to make it to Ted's, so that could work.

If not, let's try to sync up another day after that.

  3.

I am a little surprised from the lack of response especially on the maintenance parts. Either people don't work on there own MINIs anymore or much fewer R53's since I left. I guess next option will be Craiglist or EBay :frown:
Brian - I'll take Ian Cull auto-up circuit. I already have one (an older version of it), and it still works fine... but would be nice to have a spare if it fails.
  4. Found this wonderful link to help sort it all out, wheel candy :)

    http://libraryofmotoring.info/facts/wheels/

Good page! Back in the earlier MINI heydays, I used to use this MINI2 forum page as a good reference:

MINI Cooper Forum - FAQ & DIY: Wheels and Tyres

Unfortunately, the image links have all broken on it, but it still has some useful info not shown on the earlier page - wheel weights! Excellent info if you care how much your wheels weigh (and you should).

It's through that page that I learned that the 1st Gen GP 18" wheels (R107) are actually lighter (19.8 lbs) than all of the OEM 17" wheels... which is one of the big reasons I use them for my summer set (in addition to me really liking how they look).

(Yes, there are a number of aftermarket wheels for MINIs that are lighter still... but I wanted to stay OEM.)

  5. You know, I think what I have are R98s, Donross yours look like mine (need to double check now).

Colby, I was given a set and one has a dent but holds air, so ljust looking to replace that one.

If you mean the photo you posted at the start of this thread, you have R90s. They look similar at a glance, but the R90s have straighter spokes and the R98s have more curvy spokes.
  6. If you want high quality work, I highly recommend D&V Autobody, in Sterling VA. (703)661-8545

They aren't the cheapest, and they aren't the fastest, but they do top notch work... as you will able to tell from the range of cars they work on (including exotics).

I've had both my MINI and my Mustang in there for extensive work and I've been very happy with the results. The manager there is Kevin - good guy.

  7. It's that time of the year again! Spring is in the air, old man Winter is running off to hide, and the trees are starting to blossom!

Just like I did in previous years, I'm organizing the Spring Fling run again, this time on Saturday, April 22.

WHERE TO MEET: Target Sterling West parking lot (South-East corner). The address is 45130 Columbia Place, Sterling, VA 20166

WHEN: Saturday, April 22 @ 9:00am. Driver's meeting at 9:50am. We depart at 10am sharp! Don't be late!

RUN DISTANCE: 69.6 miles (morning) + 68.0 miles (afternoon) = 137.6 miles total. Easy "early exits" available in afternoon at 88.7 miles (Rt 66), 105.7 miles (Rt 50) and 123.9 miles (Rt 50).

RUN TIME: Approx 6.5 hours - we will return to the Target parking lot at approx. 4:30pm, if you decide to complete the full run.

WHAT TO BRING: Full tank of gas, 2-way radio, money to buy lunch (cash please - makes it easier for the check), sweater/raincoat/umbrella (if necessary, depending on weather) and a fun-loving attitude! :top:

    A quick refresher:

One of my fondest MINI-related memories is the very first drive I ever participated in with DCMM - it was the Spring Fling, created by Bruce Pancoast (mty_mini), and organized with help from Jen Oakes (Jen) - who was our event coordinator at the time. This all happened on Sunday, April 24, 2005... only 7 1/2 weeks after I picked up my brand new MINI. Alan (Scavenger), who was getting his first exposure to the MINI, came along as my co-pilot.

Meeting in the Sterling Wegmans parking lot (near MINI of Sterling), it was fun to meet a whole bunch of like-minded MINIacs all at once, for the first time. Little did I know just how much fun there was still to come... after grabbing some coffee and/or breakfast snacks from Wegmans.

The roads were beautiful and twisty, and was such an awesome experience to be in a long line of MINIs for the very first time. We stopped for lunch at Orlean Market in Upperville, VA (in western Fauquier County), then continued on for wine tasting at Naked Mountain Vineyard & Winery after that, before heading all the way back to Wegmans.

It was a long day (128 miles or so!), but so nice. Needless to say, I was eager to do this run again.

Our lunch stop will be again be at Griffin Tavern, since Orlean Market closed down many years ago.

NOTE: The plan is to have 1 check per table, so to make things easier to sort out, please bring sufficient CA$H to cover your portion of the check. Their April 2017 lunch menu is here:

Due to severe size limitations from the local wineries, we do not participate in wine tasting any more. However, you are welcome to order yourself a glass of wine with lunch at Griffin Tavern.

Hope to see many of you out there again!

RSVPs are OPEN! Please note that our lunch stop (Griffin Tavern) has given us a hard cap of 48 people, so if we reach that number, RSVPs will be closed.

If possible, please have your final RSVP in by Thursday, April 20, so I can give the restaurant a close headcount.

  8. Hey guys,

Are any of the folks in the club who are coming early, interested in a game night at MOTD?

I have the following games that I could bring, for example:

    • Settlers of Catan - 3-6 people
    • Cards Against Humanity - 4-20+ people
    • Joking Hazard - 3-10 people
    • Exploding Kittens - 2-9 people
    • Secret Hitler - 5-10 people

I figure that on one of the early nights (Sunday, Monday or Tuesday), it could be a fun thing to do.

  9. Good news! I asked Barry who makes the Snooters Sweatshop buttons and he said he did.

Since we didn't need many he made them for us for free!!!!

We'll get them at the Dragon

That's great! :top: What are the green and yellow ones for?
  10. Brandy needs to get tint on Nila, but I plan on waiting for your move around the beltway as Maryland tint laws a a bit more lax.

    Tint darkness for sedans:

Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 5 inches of the windshield.

Front Side windows: Must allow more than 35% of light in.

Back Side windows: Must allow more than 35% of light in.

Rear Window: Must allow more than 35% of light in.

Tint darkness for SUV and vans:

Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 5 inches of the windshield.

Front Side windows: Must allow more than 35% of light in.

Back Side windows: Any darkness can be used.

Rear Window: Any darkness can be used.

What I need to find out is does Maryland consider a countryman an SUV. Is there someone that has MD plates on their Countryman, and can tell me if the registration says sedan or SUV? Thanks:top:

Interesting, and good info. I'd be curious how the Countryman and Paceman are listed, too.

BTW, a few years ago I created the following FAQ item on window tint - I'll be happy to add or update it if something changed:

FAQ: General FAQ - What are the state laws regarding car window tint?
