The I-40 bypass in Knoxville isn't that bad... you just have to know that you need to take 40 East to get back to exit 386B onto 129. Also, it will be a little bit dicey with very little room to merge, and the 386B exit itself is through

Don't worry, it'll come back to you when you're at MINI United and we're not.Have fun everybody. So jealous -
Muchas gracias, Mamá!

Hey - thanks to everyone that came out today. It may have been a small group (9 people, 7 MINIs), but that wasn't such a bad thing, because it meant we didn't get separated as much, and moved more efficiently!
To those who wanted to come but w

Flame Spokes (R97s) are 17" x 7" and weigh 22 pounds each. The "standard" tire size for them is 205/45R17, but some people put 215s on them. What size? Could pick up.Here's the #1 most common reason I visit MINI2:

OK, I called Griffin Tavern, and told them there would be about 10 people coming at around 12:30pm. If the numbers change dramatically before we head out in the morning, I'll call again to update them.
See you (some of you, anyway!) between 9:30am and

As a nice little "extra", cameroon has gone ahead and mapped out the route for us in Google Maps. Thanks cameroon!

OK, I have the final route sheet for Saturday. Don't worry about printing it in advance, I'll be bringing plenty of copies along with me.

Bad news: Low turnout. I hope more make it next time.
Sorry guys. I intended to go (I even woke up in time!) but my body was unwilling.guess I was the one and only board member. -
I'm sitting here at home, deliberating on whether to go or not. I want to go... but my stomach is upset and giving me problems, so I don't know how smart it is to leave the house.
If I don't end up being there, I'm sorry! Best of intentions,

I wonder how they'll react to me showing up in a loaner car from one of their competing dealerships? :embarassed:
Do I park so the rear windshield is facing away down the street?

I have no need for a chrome front grille(or chrome mirror caps, for that matter), but I do have HB upper & lower grilles that I recently removed from my MINI. (I also have the OEM bumper covers & side skirts... but I digress).I currently have a chrome front grill from an 06 R53. Would anyone like to trade for thier black or hyper blue grill? I also have chrome mirror caps to trade if someone has an extra grill they have lying around. Thanks for looking,

If you don't manage to find the trade you want, perhaps we can settle on a mutually agreeable price for my HB grilles.

Any FRS & GRMS 2-way radio that supports "privacy codes" (i.e. subchannels) should suffice. None of them really get very good rangeFor those of us that are new, any recommendation for two-way? I'm assuming some sort of FRS. -
Well, if our intended departure times line up close enough, perhaps a "Caravan to Knoxville"?Well I am not going to MOTD; but I am leaving for Oklahoma city on that Tuesday and will be taking the same route; well until Knoxville then I will stay on 40 for another 700 miles or so. I will be leaving early and am not really a "stick to the speed limit" person, ask Kurt about that. But I will be looking for MINIs anyway. -
It's that time of the year again! Spring is in the air, old man Winter is running off to hide, and the trees are starting to blossom!
Just like I did [url="http://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/dc-metro-minis-archive/131437-sunday-apr-6th-and-20t

Yep, police definitely a concern... finding the right "balance" between time efficiency and wallet efficiency is always a challenge!Wish I could, but can't leave until Wednesday morning. I like your route, 81 to TN is a great run down the corridor. Just watch out for police, they love hiding up and down there. If you could send me your route details there I will be taking the same route the next day. Here's the route I'll be taking - starting at I-495:
- I-66W to I-81S (64.5 miles)
- I-81S to I-40W (376 miles) (also, a stop for gas just inside TN border)
- I-40W to Knoxville (32.1 miles)
- At this point, there are a few turns you have to take through Knoxville, but there should be signs to take you to Maryville. Follow those until you're on Rt 129. (I use my Nav system)
- Rt 129 to Rt 28 (52.8 miles - the last 11.3 of which is the Dragon!)
- Rt 28 to Fontana Village (9.2 miles)
The total trip distance is 542 miles, according to Google Maps (route link), for a little over 9 hours. If you are not a "strictly speed limit" person like me, it will take about 8 hours. Add back in the gas/food stop(s), and it comes back to 9.
Mind you, even in my "least efficient MINI" R53, if I start the trip with a full tank, I manage to make the whole trip with only one stop for gas (usually just inside TN, as noted in step 2 above). So 2 tanks for the whole trip.
R56s won't need to stop at the TN border, of course... and they might be able to make the whole distance on 1 tank... if driven very conservatively.

Hey everyone... I'm planning on driving down to MOTD 1 day early (Tuesday, April 28). I'll be taking Rt 66 out to the very end (Strasburg, VA) then taking Rt 81 South from there to Knoxville, then down to Maryville, and finally Rt 129. The total drive time is ~8 hours, plus a stop or two for food & gas. This is my 5th MOTD, so it has become a comfortable annual routine.
The departure time is not decided yet... but I'm flexible if we end up having a caravan. Since I live in Annandale, only a few short miles (3.2) from I-66, rush hour traffic should not be a huge factor (from my house, at least).
Anyway... are there any other DCMMers who also want to go on Tuesday, that would like to do a caravan?

It's definitely been done before - see this link (Porsche GT3). I did a little searching online and found other references to cars that have the "entire vehicle" treatment as well.
Let me throw out there a "wild guess" on the price for an entire MINI. $3500. That's just a hunch. Curious to see how close I am on that!
In my opinion, the only time it's really worth doing the whole car is:
- The car is brand new (or has just been totally repainted)
- The car is thoroughly and professionally detailed right before application
With both of those conditions met, then yeah, I can see it being worthwhile. Otherwise you're just covering something less than perfection to begin with!

Why stop there? Why not have them do the entire car? From a cost perspective, I would definitely rather not cover the whole bonnet. But then I'd be driven nuts by the line and eventually get it redone to get ride of the line anyway.Early on, I actually contemplated getting a quote on that... but somewhere deep down, a more reasoned voice won... quite a rarity when it comes to me and my MINI.
-
Well... you could tell them you want them to put it on the entire bonnet... but that would probably get kinda expen$ive. Thanks for the responses everyone, I'm getting quotes from the vendors recommended here. I can tell my quest to not have a line across the bonnet is going to hurt -
I have the clear bra installed on my MCS before I even took delivery. Boy am I glad I did! The front still looks good, even after 4 years of ownership. Recently, I had the OEM Aero Kit installed on my MINI as well, and I had the clear bra / invisishield re-applied to the parts that were replaced (bumper covers). I didn't even hesitate - I know it's well worth it.
-
I'm driving down on Tuesday too, only I'm doing the whole drive in 1 day. It's 8 hours - not too bad. I'm going solo... unless someone else wants to go a day early too? It's nice getting there before the crowd.Dave (hopefully) and I will be heading out sometime on Tuesday. We have a room at the Hampton Inn in Abingdon VA on Tuesday night and then we'll continue to the Dragon on Wednesday.
Me too! :motor:We're getting excited!! -
Fixed. :top:Maxi, just FYI, the subject says 4-09, but the event is in May. -
Somewhere at the back, I think I spot a BMW Z4 Coupe. :motor:THAT is a lot of MINIs:rock::top::congrats:
Was it you???

Actually, this particular visit is both fixing up some issues (mainly - the black textured paint on my aero kit... it looks like salt and pepper already!), and adding some new stuff.
The real irony? Sunday evening I dropped off my other car (thanks for the help Laura!), which is a 95 Ford Mustang GT, at the shop as well. It's in for much needed maintenance (not to mention ensuring it will pass VA inspection & emissions).
That means I own two cars and both of them are now in the shop at the same time. Doh!
