  1. The intent was for this to be a group outing, but Yes I would do it again... ill let others propose a date though so we can get more interest/attendance.

It was a lot of fun. In fact, the second run down the road I hit 70 a few times and took some curves a bit faster and managed to make myself a little nauseated. It was awesome.

  2. Made it back in one piece. Car just got washed because of the ridiculous amount of bugs I picked up over the 600+ miles. Totally worthwhile trip.

Marion has a lot of restaurants and fast food joints given it's size. The downtown area where I stayed was nice. It wasn't amazing, but it was nice. Hungry Mother State Park was near by (about 2 miles away) which offered swimming, paddle boards, canoes, etc. So a good weekend trip makes this 5 hour drive worth it.

Tazewell was barren. Not much to see or do there. Because it was so slim pickin's I recommend a south to north run and flip around to get back to Marion... it definitely had more to offer.

  3. Woot! South to North complete! What a great road to drive! Average speed 56mph... Got hung up behind some truck who let me pass and then a Mini Van... Worth the trip! Time to RGB some water, stretch and do it again!!

  4. May have tagged one of our own. Jasen Hicks' GP today in south parking. I couldn't tell if it was his or if it was a random GP just running around the Pentagon. It had temp tags on. But hey, recycle the card if it was you Jasen! :hahaha::laugh:

It was you! That's me... Florida and Passport can't figure out how to make my Florida Transfer plates allowed again.

I posted about this in the Members section.

  5. I was wondering why you took an exit after we just got on 81. Glad you ended up catching up! It was nice to see a GP in my rearview on the way home :)

Thanks for a great event Ali!

I was less than thrilled with that choice.... but I did make it a goal to catch back up. It did require a few 95+ sprints to make it happen though. Too bad the blue Countryman didn't stick with us after Manassas.

Anywho, here are a few pictures that I took... I didn't mess with them at all in Photoshop yet, but there are some Minis in a few of them.

  6. Thanks for this. I had a great time. Chillin and I ended up running tandem back to Fairfax (after my GPS set me off on the wrong path and I ended up catching her)... I figured I should spend some time at home today.

Thanks Ali! I hope BOTD is as fun as today was!

  7. Epically.

I hate forums for that very reason... I too fail epically with jokes in the written form. I suppose ill let it slide...... but just this once!

See you out there today. Im starting to make my way now!

  8. Quitta had hers first!

    Not sure why that matters...

    -- Break Break --

Weather out here in Falls Church is looking a little dark so I hope it gets nice out west. I have an extra radio that someone can borrow if they need to.

  9. The Go Kart is washed, waxed, and ready for tomorrow... Although I may not be. I'm not looking forward to getting up early for the hour drive out to Purceville to kick off the day.... I didn't get to sleep in as much as I wanted to today!

I take it the directions that were put out were informational... I fully intend on just following the trail of Mini's ahead of me.

  10. Here's the loose plan I have, probably won't get more detailed because then it feels too much like work!

    1. Take off from Falls Church at 0830. I think meeting up in the iHop parking lot off of 50 and Annandale would work.

    2. Drive for about 3.5 hours and stop for lunch somewhere quick... maybe in Radford or something.

    3. Arrive in Marion ~6 hours after depart, 1430.

    4. We can check in to a hotel, I am thinking the General Franklin, http://gfmhotel.com/blackrooster/, it's $99 a night. Frankly, I will have just met most of you... you might be creepy. Plus it seems like its a decent place in a populated area so finding a place to grab a drink after we put the kids to bed (... the cars.. not actual kids...) should be easy.

    5. Make the Drive up to Tazwell along the Back of the Dragon. It's supposedly an hour.

    6. Dinner in Tazwell. Choices are very limited... seems back-woods VA isn't the hip dineout area like DC. Yelp says this place is good? I'm throwing out some ideas. This is literally the most planning I have ever done for a personal trip! http://www.yelp.com/biz/el-mariachi-...north-tazewell

    7. Sunset cruise back to Marion for some drinks and sleep.

    8. Leave in the AM. I might hit up some of the National Parks for photo ops of nature... not sure yet.

  11. Ok, so here's what I have worked out in my little bubble:

  12. I find it funny that the Back of the Dragon website tries to poke fun at the Tail of the Dragon with the phrase "eleven... try thirty-two", implying somehow that Route 16 is better simply because it's longer.

Hmm, let's do the math, shall we?

    Back of the Dragon (VA-16)

    Curves: 260

    Length: 32 miles

"Curviness": 8.125 curves per mile (average)

    Tail of the Dragon (US-129)

    Curves: 318

    Length: 11.1 miles

"Curviness": 28.65 curves per mile (average)

Ummm... yeah. Not even close - with 20 extra curves per mile on average! That being said, I still want to check out Route 16 sometime! Doubt I can make this trip though - logistics. :frown:

    :boring:

Wife is probably out, so I will plot everything out and weigh some options and thoughs. Should have something by tomorrow assuming El Derecho doesn't destroy my house!

  13. I'm flexible. I have been looking at some of the hotels in that area, to see how they match up with location to BOTD. I am still not sure if the wife is going to go. If so, I may have to spring for something a little more "upscale"... she's not as easy going as the guy who sleeps on a 5.5' x 2' bed aboard a submarine for six months at a time.
