What are the state laws regarding car window tint?

State laws vary widely on the level of tint you can put on your car windows without receiving a "fix it" ticket.

 

NOTE: The percentage shown reflects how much light is allowed through. 100% means no tint. 5% is limo tint.

Here are the local area tint laws for cars:

Washington DC (circa 2001) Link: 50-2207.02

Front Side Windows: 70%
Rear Side Windows: 50%
Rear Windshield: 50%

Maryland (circa 1995) Link: 11.14.09.12

Front Side Windows: 35%
Rear Side Windows: 35%
Rear Windshield: 35%

Virginia (circa 1999) Links: 46.2-1052 46.2-1053

Front Side Windows: 50%
Rear Side Windows: 35%
Rear Windshield: 35%
